San Joaquin Delta vs Modesto
MODESTO, Calif. (Interstat) — A stark contrast in trajectories will be on display Friday night when the state-leading Modesto Pirates host the struggling San Joaquin Delta Mustangs in a California Community College men’s basketball matchup.
The Pirates (19-3 overall) enter as one of the region’s elite teams, their record blemished by only three close losses. Their most recent was a narrow 82-78 road defeat to Sierra on Tuesday, which snapped a strong run of conference play. Prior to that, Modesto’s dominance was clear, including a 105-79 rout of Sacramento City and an 88-69 win at Diablo Valley. Their defense has been a consistent catalyst, holding opponents under 70 points in most victories.
Conversely, the Mustangs (9-10) are mired in a difficult stretch, having lost five of their last six games. They are coming off a particularly rough 78-53 home loss to Cosumnes River on Tuesday. Defense has been a persistent issue for Delta, which has allowed 80 or more points in seven of its ten losses this season.
The teams met just last month in Stockton, with Modesto securing an 80-67 victory on Jan. 8. That game fits a troubling pattern for the Mustangs, who have shown flashes of potential—like an 85-75 win at American River on Jan. 27—but have struggled for consistency.
Friday’s game presents a clear challenge for San Joaquin Delta: finding a way to slow down a potent Modesto offense that has averaged 86 points in its wins. The Mustangs will need to recover quickly from Tuesday’s 25-point defeat to be competitive. For Modesto, the focus is on rebounding from its rare loss and protecting its home court as it pursues a conference title.
The Pirates won the first head-to-head meeting this season by 13 points. Given the current form of both teams, Modesto will be a heavy favorite to complete the regular-season sweep. Tipoff is set for Friday, Feb. 6, 2026, at Modesto Junior College.
