Los Angeles Trade Tech vs East Los Angeles
Preview: East Los Angeles Hosts Los Angeles Trade Tech in Key JUCO Matchup
MONTEREY PARK, Calif. (Interstat) — A pivotal California Community College Athletic Association men’s basketball matchup is set for Wednesday when the East Los Angeles Huskies host the Los Angeles Trade Tech Beavers.
The Huskies (12-8) enter with a winning record and momentum from a 71-68 victory over Pasadena City on Jan. 30. Forward Terrence Hampton, a player to watch, posted a double-double in that win with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The visiting Beavers (11-11) look to rebound from a tough 73-69 overtime loss to Mount San Antonio on that same date. Despite the defeat, forward Will Smith III delivered a dominant performance, playing all 45 minutes and recording 25 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks.
Smith III has been on a remarkable run, averaging a double-double over his last six full games. His recent stretch includes 18 points and 14 rebounds in a double-overtime win at Rio Hondo on Jan. 21 and 22 points against Compton on Jan. 14.
East Los Angeles has won three of its last four games, with its only recent setback an 80-87 loss at Mount San Antonio. The Huskies’ defense has been key, holding opponents to 68 points or fewer in three of those contests.
The Beavers’ season has been marked by streaks, alternating wins and losses in their last seven games. Their offense can be potent, evidenced by a 117-point outing against Rio Hondo, but consistency has been elusive.
This game is the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams. They will meet again at Los Angeles Trade Tech on Friday, Feb. 20.
Wednesday’s contest could hinge on the interior battle between East Los Angeles’ Hampton and Trade Tech’s Smith III. The Huskies will aim to use their home court advantage to solidify their standing, while the Beavers seek a road win to climb back to .500 in conference play.
Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. at East Los Angeles College.
