Oxnard vs Santa Barbara
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (Interstat) — The Santa Barbara City College men’s basketball team overcame a dominant individual performance by Oxnard’s Carter Reid to edge the Condors 71-66 in a California Community College Athletic Association game Wednesday night.
The Vaqueros, who evened their overall record at 11-11, relied on a balanced offensive attack and a disruptive defense to secure the victory. Oxnard fell to 5-17.
The game’s pivotal stretch came late in the second half. With Santa Barbara clinging to a narrow lead, its defense stiffened, forcing several key Oxnard turnovers in the final minutes. The Condors, who struggled with ball security throughout the game with 18 turnovers, could not muster a final rally.
Jack Berry led the Vaqueros with 24 points, including several crucial baskets in the paint during the second half. James Reach added 14 points and a team-high six assists, while Mason Thomas contributed 11 points. The trio helped Santa Barbara shoot 47.5 percent from the field and outscore Oxnard 39-28 after halftime.
Oxnard was carried by a spectacular effort from Carter Reid, who scored a game-high 25 points on 11-of-19 shooting, adding nine rebounds and two blocks. The Condors raced to an early lead, but could not sustain their offensive efficiency against Santa Barbara’s pressure.
The Vaqueros capitalized on their opportunities, scoring 18 points off Oxnard turnovers compared to just five points off their own 14 giveaways. Santa Barbara also held advantages in assists, steals and rebounding, grabbing 10 offensive boards to Oxnard’s seven.
Despite Reid’s efforts, Oxnard’s offense sputtered down the stretch, missing its final five field goal attempts. Tristan Carter provided a spark off the bench with nine points for the Condors, all from the free-throw line where he was a perfect 9-for-9. As a team, Oxnard shot 84.6 percent on free throws but just 25 percent from three-point range.
Santa Barbara’s Brycen Matthews facilitated the offense with five assists, and Dominic Bonafede anchored the interior with six rebounds and a block.
The win completed a regular-season sweep for Santa Barbara, which defeated Oxnard 88-64 on Jan. 10.
Santa Barbara next travels to face Ventura on Saturday. Oxnard hosts Cuesta on Feb. 11.
