Cuyamaca vs MiraCosta

Preview: Cuyamaca Coyotes at MiraCosta Spartans

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (Interstat) — Two men’s junior college basketball teams with identical conference aspirations but matching sub-.500 records will meet Wednesday when the MiraCosta Spartans host the Cuyamaca Coyotes.

The California community college matchup features two teams at 8-11 overall, each looking to gain traction in the second half of the season. The game is scheduled for Jan. 28 at MiraCosta College.

Cuyamaca won the previous meeting this season, 62-57 at home on Dec. 19. The Coyotes are coming off a narrow 73-69 road loss to Grossmont on Jan. 23, despite a strong performance from guard Jordan Garner. The sophomore recorded 22 points, six rebounds and nine assists in that contest.

Garner has been a consistent force for Cuyamaca, averaging 18.8 points and 6.0 assists over his last four games. His playmaking will be central to the Coyotes’ attack.

MiraCosta enters with momentum from a tight 89-87 home victory over San Diego Miramar on Jan. 23. The Spartans’ season has been marked by volatility, with a 101-83 road win at Grossmont on Jan. 7 followed by a 101-74 loss at Palomar on Jan. 21.

Spartans forward Alonzo Smith provides a scoring punch, coming off an 18-point performance in 20 minutes against Palomar. His efficiency and ability to stretch the floor will challenge the Coyotes’ defense.

Both teams have struggled for consistency within conference play. A win Wednesday would provide a critical boost ahead of the final stretch of the schedule. Cuyamaca will look to sweep the season series, while MiraCosta aims to defend its home court and level the head-to-head tally.

The game is set to tip off at 5 p.m. PST.
