Moorpark vs Los Angeles Pierce
MOORPARK, Calif. (Interstat) — The Moorpark College men’s basketball team used a dominant first-half offensive display and a significant rebounding advantage to secure a 92-72 victory over Los Angeles Pierce College in a California Community College Athletic Association game Wednesday night.
The visiting Raiders established control early, building a double-digit lead in the first quarter and never looking back. Moorpark’s efficient start proved insurmountable for the Brahmas, who struggled to find consistent offense outside of the paint.
Eric Kubel led all scorers with 21 points for Moorpark, continuing a strong stretch of play for the Raiders’ top performer. Roman Finney added 19 points and five assists, while Josh Castaniero contributed eight points, six rebounds and five assists. For Los Angeles Pierce, Kameron Fricks scored 22 points and Milan Kis added 16.
The most pivotal stretch of the game occurred in the opening quarter, where Moorpark’s offensive execution and defensive pressure created immediate separation. After the Brahmas scored the first two points on free throws, the Raiders embarked on a decisive 17-2 run. The surge was fueled by Finney, who scored six points during the stretch, and Kubel, who connected on two three-pointers. Moorpark’s defense forced several early misses and turnovers from Pierce, converting those opportunities into easy transition baskets. The Raiders shot over 50% from the field in the quarter and finished the period with a 38-32 lead, a margin they would only expand as the game progressed.
Moorpark’s offensive rating of 117.2 points per 100 possessions underscored its efficiency, largely built on second-chance opportunities. The Raiders crushed the Brahmas on the glass, hauling in 50 total rebounds to Pierce’s 36, including a 19-10 edge in offensive rebounds. This relentless work on the boards compensated for a subpar three-point shooting night for Moorpark, which made just 12 of 34 attempts from beyond the arc.
Conversely, Los Angeles Pierce’s offense faltered, particularly from long distance. The Brahmas made only 2 of 12 three-point attempts, an offensive rating of 94.9. While Pierce managed 10 steals and forced 15 Moorpark turnovers, they could not capitalize sufficiently, committing 10 turnovers of their own and failing to slow the Raiders’ interior attack.
With the win, Moorpark improved its season record to 13-8. Los Angeles Pierce fell to 5-16. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Moorpark entered the game with a 91.10 percent probability to win.
Moorpark next plays at Santa Barbara on Saturday. Los Angeles Pierce travels to face Ventura, also on Saturday.
