Canyons vs Bakersfield
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Interstat) — In a pivotal California community college men’s basketball matchup, the Bakersfield Renegades outlasted the College of the Canyons Cougars 85-78 on Wednesday night, using a dominant second-half performance to secure the victory.
The game’s most important sequence came in the final seconds, effectively sealing the outcome. With Canyons trailing by three and just six seconds remaining, a costly turnover by the Cougars’ Thomas Pickens gave Bakersfield possession. The Renegades’ star guard, Zykiar Henderson, capitalized immediately, driving for a layup with four seconds left to extend the lead to five and eliminate any chance of a last-second tie.
Henderson was the engine for Bakersfield, scoring a game-high 25 points on efficient interior shooting. His consistent penetration, particularly in the second half, helped the Renegades overcome a tightly contested opening period. The teams were tied at 37 after a first half characterized by sloppy play and missed opportunities on both ends.
The second half belonged to Bakersfield, which outscored Canyons 48-41. While Henderson provided the scoring punch, the Renegades’ defense was the foundation of the win. Bakersfield recorded 10 blocked shots and 13 steals, disrupting Canyons’ offensive flow and contributing to 21 Cougar turnovers. Zach Garnett was a force in the paint for Bakersfield, adding 14 points and three blocks, while Markell Brooks contributed 15 points, nine rebounds and two blocks.
Canyons was led by Thomas Pickens with 19 points, though he was hampered by turnovers. Jeremiah Williams added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Cougars, and Dwayne Boston Jr. also scored 15. The Cougars struggled offensively, shooting just 35.8% from the field compared to Bakersfield’s 49.3%. Canyons kept the game close by attacking the basket and drawing fouls, attempting 32 free throws to Bakersfield’s 23, and by grabbing 20 offensive rebounds.
The win improved Bakersfield’s overall record to 11-9, while Canyons fell to 12-8. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in a rematch at College of the Canyons on Feb. 20.
Bakersfield next plays at Santa Monica on Saturday. Canyons will host Antelope Valley on Saturday.
