Canyons vs Bakersfield
Preview: Canyons Cougars at Bakersfield Renegades
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Interstat) — A pivotal California community college men’s basketball matchup is set for Wednesday night as the Bakersfield Renegades host the Canyons Cougars.
The Cougars (12-7) enter on a three-game winning streak, most recently defeating Santa Monica 79-69 on Saturday. The Renegades (10-9) are looking to build momentum after a dominant 96-80 road win at Los Angeles Valley that same day.
The game features a compelling showdown between two of the state’s top performers. Canyons is led by guard Dwayne Boston Jr., who has scored 21 or more points in four of his last five games, including a 21-point, six-rebound effort in the win over Santa Monica. He is averaging 19.1 points over his last seven contests.
Bakersfield counters with forward Markell Brooks, who is coming off a monstrous 30-point, 16-rebound performance. Brooks has recorded a double-double in three of his last six games and is a consistent force in the paint, also averaging nearly three blocks per game over that stretch.
Team trends diverge sharply. Canyons has found its rhythm in January, winning five of its last seven, with its losses coming against strong Citrus and Antelope Valley squads. The Cougars’ offense has been potent, averaging 84.3 points during their current win streak.
Bakersfield’s season has been marked by volatility, with dramatic wins followed by lopsided losses. Their 109-78 loss at Citrus on Jan. 21 preceded their 16-point victory over LA Valley, highlighting their unpredictable form. Defense has been an issue, as the Renegades have allowed 93 or more points in four of their last six games.
For Canyons, support for Boston Jr. comes from Thomas Pickens, who posted 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists against Santa Monica, and Julius Washington, who added 14 points and eight boards.
Bakersfield’s Zach Garnett provides a key secondary option, scoring 17 points with six rebounds and three blocks in the last outing, while Godwill Fomusoh added an efficient 15 points in just 16 minutes off the bench.
This contest is the first of a regular-season series, with the rematch scheduled at Canyons on Feb. 20. Wednesday’s result will impact positioning within the conference as both teams navigate a challenging schedule ahead.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. PST at Bakersfield College’s Gil Bishop Sports Center.
