Riverside vs Cypress
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Interstat) — A pivotal California community college men’s basketball matchup awaits Friday as the Riverside Tigers visit the Cypress Chargers, with both teams looking to break a .500 stalemate in the conference standings.
The Tigers (10-7) enter on a two-game win streak, most recently edging Irvine Valley 78-76 on Jan. 16. The Chargers (9-8), however, aim to rebound from a 69-52 home loss to Fullerton that same night.
Riverside’s offense flows through sophomore guard Kollen Murphy, who is coming off a career-high 30-point performance in the win over Irvine Valley. Over his last four games, Murphy is averaging 19 points and 3.3 assists, providing a consistent scoring threat.
Cypress will counter with forward Michael Wright, a dominant force on the boards. Wright has recorded four double-doubles in his last six contests, including an 18-point, 16-rebound effort in a loss to Santiago Canyon on Jan. 9. His ability to control the paint will be critical against a Riverside team that has shown offensive volatility.
The season series is split 1-1, with each team winning on its home court in non-conference play earlier this season. Friday’s result will carry weight for postseason positioning in a tightly packed conference race.
Riverside has shown resilience in close games, while Cypress has struggled offensively at times, failing to reach 60 points in three of its last five outings.
The game tips off at 7 p.m. at Cypress College. Admission is $5, cash only. The teams will meet again in Riverside on Feb. 18.
