Imperial Valley vs Cuyamaca
EL CAJON, Calif. (Interstat) — The struggling Imperial Valley College men’s basketball team seeks its first win of the season Wednesday when it visits Cuyamaca College in a California community college matchup.
The Imperial Valley Arabs (0-18) enter on a 12-game losing streak, most recently falling 93-73 to San Diego Miramar last Friday. Their season has been marked by lopsided defeats, including a 129-62 loss at Palomar on Jan. 14.
Cuyamaca (7-10) looks to build momentum after a 83-78 home victory over San Diego Mesa on Jan. 14 snapped a two-game skid. The Coyotes have shown resilience at home, with notable wins over MiraCosta and San Diego Miramar in December.
A key matchup will feature two of the conference’s top scorers. Imperial Valley will rely on Amir Russell, who scored 24 points in 36 minutes against Palomar. For Cuyamaca, guard Jordan Garner has been a consistent offensive threat, pouring in 19 points against San Diego City on Jan. 9.
The Arabs face a daunting task, having lost by an average margin of 36.5 points in their last four games. Defense has been a persistent issue, as they have allowed 100 or more points five times this season.
Conversely, the Coyotes have struggled with consistency but have protected their home court effectively in conference play. A victory would move them closer to a .500 record as they head into a tough stretch against Grossmont and San Diego Miramar next week.
Wednesday’s game represents perhaps the best remaining opportunity for Imperial Valley to break into the win column this season. The teams will meet again in El Centro on Feb. 18.
Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. PST at Cuyamaca College.
