Cerro Coso vs San Bernardino Valley
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (Interstat) — A stark contrast in momentum will be on display Saturday when the San Bernardino Valley College Wolverines host the Cerro Coso Coyotes in a California Community College men’s basketball matchup.
The Wolverines (13-5) enter riding a four-game winning streak and boast one of the region’s most potent offenses. The Coyotes (4-11), meanwhile, seek to snap a five-game skid in what will be a formidable road test.
San Bernardino Valley has been dominant in recent outings, averaging 91.8 points during its win streak. Sophomore guard Duante Murphy has been instrumental, coming off a 22-point, 8-assist performance in an 87-68 rout of Barstow on Wednesday. Over his last three games, Murphy is averaging 22.3 points and 5.0 assists, providing explosive scoring and playmaking.
Cerro Coso’s struggles have persisted despite the steady play of point guard Demarris Day. The Coyotes’ floor general is coming off an 11-assist effort in a 66-59 loss to Mount San Jacinto on Wednesday, where Terrance Sims Jr. led the team with 16 points. Day has averaged 8.0 assists over his last three contests, but Cerro Coso has struggled to find consistent scoring, failing to reach 80 points in any of its 11 losses this season.
The teams’ recent results highlight the challenge ahead for the Coyotes. San Bernardino Valley crushed common opponents Desert (112-73) and Copper Mountain (97-70) in December, while Cerro Coso fell to both teams earlier this month. The Wolverines’ balanced attack, which also features Jaden Riley and Stanley Thomas III, will test a Cerro Coso defense allowing an average of 71.2 points per game.
Saturday’s contest is the first of two regular-season meetings between the Inland Empire Athletic Conference foes. They are scheduled to meet again in Ridgecrest on Feb. 18.
Tip-off is set for Saturday afternoon at San Bernardino Valley College.
