Western Nebraska vs Northeastern (Colo.)
STERLING, Colo. (Interstat) — The Northeastern Junior College Plainsmen used a dominant first half and a standout performance from Dodge Davis to defeat the Western Nebraska Community College Cougars 72-53 in a men’s junior college basketball game Saturday.
The game was effectively decided before halftime, as the Plainsmen built a commanding 33-27 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 72-53 by the break. Western Nebraska never mounted a significant challenge in the second half, with both teams held scoreless after intermission in a defensive stalemate.
The most important phase of the game was Northeastern’s explosive start. The Plainsmen opened with a 10-2 run in the first three minutes, fueled by Ethan Carter’s early layup and dunk. This immediate pressure set the tone, forcing Western Nebraska into a reactive mode from which it never recovered. Despite a brief response that cut the lead to 23-20 late in the first quarter, the Cougars could not sustain momentum. Northeastern closed the first period on a 10-3 run to re-establish a double-digit cushion and continued to pull away throughout the second quarter.
Dodge Davis led the Plainsmen with a comprehensive stat line of 15 points, 13 rebounds and five assists, controlling the paint and facilitating the offense. Quis Davis added a game-high 24 points, while Ethan Carter contributed 18. For Western Nebraska, Xavier Kirkpatrick came off the bench to score 13 points, all in the first half.
The statistical disparity told the story of Northeastern’s comprehensive victory. The Plainsmen shot 56 percent from the field compared to Western Nebraska’s 36 percent. Northeastern also dominated in assists (14-4), steals (14-4) and rebounds (36-25). The Cougars struggled mightily from beyond the arc, making just 4 of 23 three-point attempts.
The victory improved Northeastern’s season record to 16-7, while Western Nebraska fell to 9-21. The Plainsmen also completed a regular-season sweep, having edged the Cougars 68-67 in their previous meeting on Jan. 10.
Interstat’s ELO system had projected Northeastern with an 84.8 percent probability to win, a forecast borne out by the Plainsmen’s efficient and commanding performance from the opening tip.
