Western Nebraska vs Northeastern (Colo.)
STERLING, Colo. (Interstat) — A tight conference rivalry will be renewed Saturday when the Northeastern (Colo.) Plainsmen host the Western Nebraska Cougars in a men’s junior college basketball matchup at Hoops Homecoming.
The Plainsmen (15-7 overall) enter as the clear favorite, boasting a strong record and recent form that includes a decisive 84-66 road win at McCook last Saturday. They have won five of their last six games. The Cougars (9-20) have struggled for consistency, coming off a 98-84 loss at North Platte on Feb. 21, though they secured a 74-65 home win over McCook three days prior.
Northeastern (Colo.) won the first meeting this season, edging Western Nebraska 68-67 on the road Jan. 10. The rematch carries weight for regional positioning.
A key matchup will feature two of the region’s top scorers. Western Nebraska will lean on guard Kellon Harris, who is averaging 20.3 points over his last three games. He poured in 22 points in the loss to North Platte and had 24 in the win over McCook. For the Plainsmen, forward Ethan Carter has been a consistent force, posting a 26-point, 8-rebound effort in a loss to Lamar on Feb. 15 and a 23-point, 8-rebound, 5-assist performance in a win over Trinidad State on Feb. 5.
The Plainsmen’s defense, which held Southeast to 47 points on Feb. 11, will be tested by Harris and Cougars guard Viktor Lukic-Gavric, who dished out seven assists in the recent loss. Northeastern (Colo.) has shown resilience in close games, with three of its last six wins coming by three points or fewer.
Western Nebraska has shown offensive sparks, scoring 89 or more points three times since late January, but its defense has often been vulnerable. The Cougars will need a complete performance to challenge the surging Plainsmen on their home court.
Tip-off is set for Saturday, Feb. 28, in Sterling.
