Western Wyoming vs Central Wyoming

ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. (Interstat) — In a game defined by wild momentum swings and a dramatic finish, the Central Wyoming College Rustlers edged the Western Wyoming Community College Mustangs 72-70 in overtime Saturday in a men’s junior college basketball contest.

The game, played before a home crowd at Central Wyoming’s facilities, saw the Rustlers improve to 7-14 overall, while the Mustangs fell to 7-16.

The contest’s most critical sequence unfolded in the final seconds of regulation, transforming what seemed like a certain Western Wyoming victory into an extra period. The Mustangs, who had dominated the first half with a blistering offensive display, led 62-56 at halftime after scoring 28 points in the first quarter and 34 in the second. Central Wyoming kept pace with 31 points in each of the first two quarters, largely behind the shooting of Jordan Peel.

Western Wyoming’s offense went cold after the break, managing only eight points in the entire third quarter. The Rustlers chipped away, and with four seconds remaining in the third quarter and the game tied at 70, Central Wyoming’s Camrin Gulley found a cutting Jordan Peel for a jump shot that gave the Rustlers a 72-70 lead heading into the fourth.

The fourth quarter became a defensive struggle, with neither team able to score. The Mustangs had a chance to tie or win on the final possession of regulation, but Jacovey Campbell’s 3-point attempt as time expired missed, sending the game to overtime.

In the extra period, both teams’ scoring droughts continued. The only points came from Central Wyoming’s Christian Kranz, who sank two free throws with 4:11 left in overtime. Those proved to be the final points of the game, as Western Wyoming failed to convert on several opportunities to tie or take the lead in the closing minutes, securing the narrow victory for the Rustlers.

Jordan Peel led all scorers with 25 points for Central Wyoming, adding six rebounds and six assists. Daniel Smith provided strong support with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Isaac Patik contributed 13 points.

For Western Wyoming, Jacovey Campbell shouldered the offensive load with 26 points and nine assists. Paulius Narvilas recorded a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds, and Filip Rypdal Overas added 12 points.

Statistically, the game was a tale of two halves and contrasting styles. Western Wyoming shot 44.1% from the field (26 of 59) but struggled from 3-point range at 25.9% (7 of 27). The Mustangs dominated the glass with 39 total rebounds, including 11 from Gvidas Laurinaitis, but were plagued by 13 turnovers and only two assists as a team.

Central Wyoming countered with volume shooting, attempting 68 field goals but making only 26 for a 38.2% clip. The Rustlers were more prolific from deep, hitting 11 of 36 from beyond the arc. They compensated for a rebounding deficit (30 total) by forcing 13 Western Wyoming turnovers while committing only five of their own, and recording five steals.

The win gave Central Wyoming a measure of revenge after falling to Western Wyoming 71-68 on Feb. 11. According to Interstat’s ELO system, the Rustlers entered the game with a 67.5% probability to win.

Central Wyoming is scheduled to play next at Laramie County on Monday.
