Northwest Florida State vs Gulf Coast State

Preview: Northwest Florida State at Gulf Coast State

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (Interstat) — A critical Panhandle Conference men’s junior college basketball rematch awaits Wednesday when the Northwest Florida State Raiders visit the Gulf Coast State Commodores.

The Raiders (20-5), ranked 12th nationally, aim to complete a regular-season sweep of the Commodores (18-6) after winning the first two meetings. Northwest Florida State won 96-89 here on Jan. 21 and took an 84-74 victory at home on Feb. 11.

Northwest Florida State enters having snapped a two-game skid with an 87-66 rout of Pensacola State on Saturday. The Raiders are led by guard Jonas Nichols, who scored 20 points in that win. Nichols torched Gulf Coast State for 25 points in their last matchup.

Gulf Coast State looks to halt a three-game losing streak, its longest of the season, which includes the Feb. 11 loss to the Raiders and a narrow 66-65 defeat at Tallahassee State on Saturday. The Commodores will rely on forward Iyran Francis, who posted 9 points and 12 rebounds in the Tallahassee loss but was limited to 4 points and 6 rebounds in the last meeting with Northwest Florida State.

The Raiders’ offense, averaging over 80 points in the two head-to-head wins, will test a Gulf Coast State defense that has allowed an average of 75.6 points during its losing streak. Conversely, the Commodores must solve a Northwest Florida State defense that forced 18 turnovers in the February encounter.

With both teams jockeying for postseason position, Wednesday’s result will significantly impact the conference standings. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. EST at the Billy Harrison Field House.
