Miami Dade vs Florida Southwestern State
FORT MYERS, Fla. (Interstat) — A surging Florida SouthWestern State squad will look to solidify its standing and complete a regular-season sweep when it hosts a Miami Dade team searching for momentum in a men’s junior college basketball matchup Wednesday.
The Buccaneers (16-5), coming off a rare loss, will face the visiting Sharks (6-9) at home, where they have been dominant this season. The teams last met on Jan. 21, with Florida SouthWestern State securing an 82-74 victory in Miami.
That result is indicative of the season trajectories for both programs. The Buccaneers have built their record on a high-powered offense and stout rebounding, while the Sharks have struggled in close games, including two consecutive losses by a single point in early February.
A key matchup will be in the paint, featuring two of the region’s top rebounders. Miami Dade will rely on David Verstraeten, who is coming off a monstrous 21-rebound, 15-point performance in a heartbreaking 67-66 loss to Indian River State on Feb. 11. In the first meeting against the Buccaneers, Verstraeten scored 18 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Florida SouthWestern State will counter with Stephen Okoro, a consistent double-double threat who dominated the boards with 18 rebounds in the January win over Miami Dade. Okoro is averaging a double-double over his last five full games, including a 17-rebound effort in the Buccaneers’ 81-67 loss at Eastern Florida State on Feb. 14.
For Miami Dade to pull the upset, containing Okoro on the glass and finding secondary scoring beyond Verstraeten and guard Anthony Gilkes will be critical. The Sharks must also improve late-game execution after their recent narrow defeats.
The Buccaneers, meanwhile, aim to bounce back from their loss and reassert their defensive identity. With a significant advantage in record and prior head-to-head result, Florida SouthWestern State enters as the heavy favorite, but must respect a Sharks team desperate to turn its season around in a rivalry setting.
Tip-off is set for Wednesday night in Fort Myers.
