Central Arizona vs Arizona Western
YUMA, Ariz. (Interstat) — The Arizona Western Matadors will look to solidify their position near the top of the conference standings when they host the rival Central Arizona Vaqueros in a men’s junior college basketball game Saturday.
The Matadors (16-6) enter the Valentine’s Day matchup on a strong run, having won five of their last six games. Their most recent victory was an 82-73 road win at Eastern Arizona on Wednesday, powered by a dominant performance from Marsai Mason. The standout forward recorded 26 points and 18 rebounds, showcasing the interior presence that has keyed Arizona Western’s successful season.
In contrast, Central Arizona (7-15) seeks to halt a four-game skid. The Vaqueros are coming off a narrow 81-77 home loss to Southern Nevada on Wednesday. Guard Luke Leatherwood has been a bright spot, scoring 19 points in that contest and will be a primary focus for the Vaqueros’ offense.
Recent history between the two teams favors the home side. This will be the third meeting this season, with Arizona Western winning both prior matchups in tightly contested affairs. The Matadors won 89-85 at home on Jan. 10, then outlasted the Vaqueros 108-98 in a high-scoring game at Central Arizona on Jan. 28.
The season series suggests another potential offensive showcase. Arizona Western’s balanced attack, led by Mason and supported by contributors like Boubacar Diatta and Paora Winitana, will test a Central Arizona defense that has allowed an average of 89 points during its current losing streak. For the Vaqueros to reverse the trend, they will need another high-output game from Leatherwood and efficient support from players like Brayden Gant and Nathan Wanjohi.
A win would bolster Arizona Western’s resume as it prepares for a tough closing stretch. Central Arizona aims to salvage a game from the season series and build momentum for its final four regular-season contests. Tip-off is set for Saturday at Arizona Western College.
