Gulf Coast State vs Northwest Florida State
NICEVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — In a high-octane Panhandle Conference showdown defined by offensive efficiency and a dominant interior presence, the Northwest Florida State Raiders outlasted the Gulf Coast State Commodores 84-74 in a men’s junior college basketball game Wednesday night.
The victory, fueled by a commanding performance in the paint and a significant advantage at the free-throw line, avenged a prior loss for the Raiders and tightened the standings between the two rivals. Northwest Florida State improved to 19-4 overall, while Gulf Coast State dropped to 18-4.
The most critical phase of the contest came in the final minutes of a tightly played second half. With the Raiders clinging to a 75-72 lead and under three minutes remaining, they executed a decisive 9-2 run to seal the victory. The surge was highlighted by a 3-pointer from Damarion Shine and a putback tip-in by Braylon Roman, extending the lead to 10 points and effectively extinguishing the Commodores’ comeback hopes.
Northwest Florida State’s success was built on exceptional shot-making and physicality inside. The Raiders shot 56.9 percent from the field compared to Gulf Coast State’s 45.9 percent. More telling was the disparity at the charity stripe, where the Raiders made 19 of 28 attempts while the Commodores converted only 12 of 19.
Justin Burns anchored the Raiders’ effort with a formidable all-around performance, recording 16 points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots. His defensive presence and work on the glass were pivotal. Jonas Nichols led all scorers with 25 points, and Damarion Vann-Kelly added 16, including three 3-pointers.
Gulf Coast State was led by Trent Lincoln’s game-high 24 points, and Devontes Cobbs contributed 19. However, the Commodores struggled from beyond the arc, making only 6 of 24 attempts, and were outrebounded 34-29.
The first half was an offensive spectacle, with both teams trading baskets at a blistering pace. The Raiders took a narrow 41-40 lead into halftime after a back-and-forth opening period that saw neither team lead by more than five points.
The game’s tempo slowed slightly in the second half, but the Raiders gradually imposed their will. Their offensive rating of 121.2 points per 100 possessions, derived from 84 points on just 69 possessions, underscored a level of efficiency the Commodores, with a rating of 104.2, could not match down the stretch.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, Northwest Florida State entered the game with a 56.90 percent probability to win.
The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Panama City on Feb. 25.
