Bulldogs vs. Bulldogs: Holmes, Mississippi Gulf Coast Set for Showdown of MACCC Leaders
PERKINSTON, Miss. (Interstat) — A clash of identical records and nicknames will highlight the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference men’s basketball slate Monday night as the Holmes Bulldogs visit the Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs.
Both teams enter the Feb. 9 contest at the Weathers/Wentzell Center with 13-3 overall records, setting the stage for a pivotal matchup in the conference standings.
Holmes, coming off a narrow 70-69 home victory over Hinds on Thursday, has won two straight. The visiting Bulldogs are led by forward Jhamien Smith, who is averaging 12.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game over his last seven contests. Smith posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Pearl River on Jan. 22 and scored 20 points in a loss to Jones on Jan. 29. In the win over Hinds, Smith contributed 10 points and five rebounds in 15 minutes.
Mississippi Gulf Coast brings considerable momentum into the game, having won its last three by an average margin of 21 points. The home Bulldogs are coming off a dominant 97-69 road win at East Mississippi on Thursday.
Gulf Coast is powered by guard Duran Parish, who has been a dynamic force. Parish is averaging 19.3 points and 8.7 assists over his last three games, including a 29-point, nine-assist performance in an 85-68 win over Mississippi Delta on Feb. 2. He also recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 assists against Hinds on Jan. 22.
Holmes has shown resilience in close games, with four of its last six wins decided by six points or fewer. Gulf Coast has displayed high-powered offense, scoring 85 or more points in five of its last six victories.
The game will be a test of Holmes’s defensive consistency against Gulf Coast’s potent backcourt, led by Parish. The outcome could have significant implications for postseason seeding as the regular season enters its final weeks.
Following this game, Holmes will travel to play Mississippi Delta on Feb. 16. Mississippi Gulf Coast’s next contest is at Itawamba on Feb. 12.
