Lamar vs McCook

Preview of Wednesday’s NJCAA Men’s Basketball Game

McCOOK, Neb. (Interstat) — A key regional rematch awaits Wednesday night when the McCook Indians host the Lamar Runnin’ Lopes in a men’s junior college basketball game at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.

The contest is a quick turnaround from their meeting just two weeks ago, on Jan. 21, when Lamar (8-12) dominated McCook (10-10) in a 100-78 home victory. That result will likely fuel the Indians’ desire for revenge on their home floor.

A major storyline will be the backcourt duel between two of the region’s top guards. Lamar’s Christian Payawal was instrumental in the first matchup, scoring 20 points and dishing eight assists in the win. He enters averaging 9.7 points and 5.7 assists per game, serving as the engine for the Runnin’ Lopes’ offense.

For McCook, Nate Coley is coming off a strong performance despite a narrow loss. He scored 30 points in the previous loss to Lamar and poured in 19 points in McCook’s most recent game, a 78-77 road loss to Northeastern (Colo.) on Jan. 31. Coley’s scoring prowess will be central to McCook’s hopes of splitting the season series.

Both teams are looking to build momentum as the season enters its final weeks. Lamar has lost two of its last three, including a 72-65 defeat at Otero on Saturday where Payawal played only one minute. McCook has also struggled recently, dropping three of its last four contests.

The game pits Lamar’s offensive firepower, which eclipsed 100 points in the last meeting, against a McCook team seeking defensive improvement and a more competitive performance at home. With both teams hovering near the .500 mark, the outcome carries weight for regional standings and postseason positioning.

Tip-off is scheduled for Wednesday night in McCook.
