North Idaho vs Utah State Eastern
Preview: North Idaho Cardinal at Utah State Eastern Eagles
PRICE, Utah (Interstat) — A key men’s junior college basketball rematch is set for Saturday when the North Idaho Cardinal visit the Utah State Eastern Eagles.
The Eagles (14-5) will look to defend their home court and complete a regular-season sweep after defeating the Cardinal (10-8) 76-71 in Coeur d’Alene on Jan. 15. That game was a tight contest, indicative of a competitive regional rivalry.
North Idaho arrives with momentum from a 102-80 rout of Colorado Northwestern last Saturday. The Cardinal have shown a Jekyll-and-Hyde tendency in January, mixing decisive wins with double-digit losses. Their success often hinges on the interior presence of sophomore Aly Toure. In the Jan. 15 loss to Utah State Eastern, Toure was dominant with 20 points and 15 rebounds in 37 minutes. He is coming off another efficient 20-point, 8-rebound performance in just 17 minutes last outing.
Utah State Eastern seeks to rebound from a 70-81 home loss to Snow on Jan. 22, which snapped a strong run in Scenic West Athletic Conference play. The Eagles are led by guard Ike Palmer, who posted 13 points and 5 rebounds in the earlier win over North Idaho. Palmer has been a consistent all-around contributor, averaging 15.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.0 assists over his last six games.
The matchup between Toure’s paint dominance and Palmer’s perimeter orchestration will be central. North Idaho must improve its offensive consistency after being held under 72 points in three of its last five games. Utah State Eastern will rely on its superior record and home-court advantage, but must contain Toure and mitigate the Cardinal’s transition game.
Saturday’s result will carry significant weight for conference tournament seeding. The teams are scheduled to meet again in Coeur d’Alene on Feb. 28.
Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. MST at the BDAC Gymnasium.
