Colorado Northwestern vs North Idaho

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho (Interstat) — The North Idaho College men’s basketball team used a dominant first-quarter surge to overwhelm Colorado Northwestern Community College and cruise to a 102-80 victory in a junior college matchup Saturday.

The game was effectively decided in the opening period, as the Cardinal erupted for 50 points while building a 15-point lead that the Spartans never seriously threatened. North Idaho’s offensive efficiency was staggering from the start, shooting 52.1 percent from the floor for the game and capitalizing on a massive 42-21 rebounding advantage, which included 20 offensive boards.

Aly Toure, named the top star for North Idaho, set the tone early and often. He scored 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds in just 17 minutes, spearheading the first-quarter onslaught. His back-to-back baskets in the opening minute, including a dunk at the 16:18 mark, helped the Cardinal quickly establish control after a sloppy start from both teams.

Colorado Northwestern, which fell to 3-16 overall, kept pace briefly with hot three-point shooting. The Spartans hit 14 of 31 from beyond the arc, with Jamison Thomson leading all scorers with 21 points and Trey Johnson adding 15. A three-pointer by Jaden Fitzhugh brought the Spartans within 10-7 early, but they could not string together enough stops to slow the Cardinal’s relentless attack.

North Idaho, which improved to 10-8, showcased balanced scoring behind Toure. Ne’quan Brown filled the stat sheet with 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Austin Ouko scored 15 points, all in the first half, and Ace Arnold provided a spark off the bench with 13 points, including three three-pointers.

The most important sequence of the game came late in the first quarter, extinguishing any hope of a Spartan rally. After a three-pointer by Colorado Northwestern’s Johnson cut the deficit to 49-46 with 19 seconds left, North Idaho’s Jacori Ervin drew a foul and made one free throw. On the ensuing possession, the Cardinal forced a stop and Ne’quan Brown drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer to push the lead to 50-46. The Cardinal then opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run, stretching the lead to 57-46 and never allowing the margin to dip below double digits again.

North Idaho’s defensive pressure was constant, generating seven steals and forcing 10 turnovers, which they converted into 18 points. The Cardinal also dominated inside, outscoring the Spartans 52-28 in the paint and scoring 23 second-chance points off their offensive rebounds.

Despite the loss, Colorado Northwestern was efficient offensively, posting an offensive rating of 121.7 points per 100 possessions and making all 10 of its free throw attempts. However, North Idaho’s offensive rating was a superior 146.7, fueled by their high-percentage shots and extra possessions.

The victory completed a regular-season sweep for North Idaho, which defeated Colorado Northwestern 81-55 on Jan. 10. The teams are scheduled to meet again on Feb. 14 in Rangely, Colorado.

North Idaho next travels to face Snow College on Thursday. Colorado Northwestern returns home to host Salt Lake Community College on Jan. 29.
