Cochise vs Central Arizona

COOLIDGE, Ariz. (Interstat) — Two Arizona junior college men’s basketball teams seeking momentum will meet Wednesday when the Cochise Apaches visit the Central Arizona Vaqueros.

The Apaches (7-7) enter on the heels of an 83-71 home victory over Eastern Arizona on Saturday, which snapped a three-game skid. Davon Jones led the way with 21 points and eight rebounds, continuing a strong stretch for the forward. Over his last four games, Jones is averaging 15 points and 6.8 rebounds, including a 20-point, 13-rebound performance in a loss to Southern Nevada on Jan. 8.

Cochise will need similar production from Jones and others like Teron Murray, who scored 26 points Saturday, to navigate a challenging road test.

Central Arizona (6-9) also snapped a losing streak its last time out, holding off Yavapai 84-78 at home. The Vaqueros were powered by a career-high 29 points from guard Tayshaun Jackson, who added six rebounds and four assists in a full 40-minute effort.

Jackson has been a volume scorer for Central Arizona, averaging 25 points over his last three contests where he played full minutes. His offensive output will be critical against a Cochise team that has shown scoring ability but defensive inconsistency.

The matchup features two programs with nearly identical records looking to climb above .500 in region play. Cochise holds a slight edge in the overall series in recent seasons, but both teams have struggled for consistency this winter, trading wins and losses.

Following this game, Cochise will host Yavapai on Saturday. Central Arizona hits the road for a game at Southern Nevada on Saturday.

Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. MST at the George Young Activity Center.
