Howard (Tex.) vs Western Texas

HOWARD, Texas (Interstat) — The Howard College Hawks delivered a dominant defensive performance, overwhelming the Western Texas Westerners 72-47 in a men’s junior college basketball game Monday night.

The outcome was rarely in doubt after a lopsided first quarter. Howard, entering the game with a 14-2 record, established immediate control, holding Western Texas to just 15 points on 5-of-29 shooting in the opening period while building a 24-point lead. The Hawks’ aggressive defense forced seven Westerners turnovers in the quarter, converting them into easy transition opportunities.

Howard’s defensive intensity set the tone for the night. The Hawks limited Western Texas to 30 percent shooting from the floor overall and just 17.2 percent from three-point range. The Westerners’ offensive rating of 72.8 points per 100 possessions underscored their struggles against Howard’s pressure. The Hawks also protected the rim effectively, recording six blocked shots while committing only five turnovers themselves, a key factor in maintaining their large lead.

The most important sequence of the game occurred early, effectively deciding the contest before it reached halftime. After Western Texas’s Anesu Dehwe hit a three-pointer to open the scoring, Howard responded with a decisive 13-0 run, fueled by stifling defense that generated multiple empty possessions for the Westerners. The run included a three-pointer from Oskar Stumer and another from Brandon Ivery, stretching the lead to 16-3 and forcing a Western Texas timeout just over five minutes into the game. Western Texas never recovered from that initial burst, unable to trim the deficit below 20 points for the remainder of the half.

Daniel Culberson led a balanced Howard attack with 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Kuai Deng added 15 points, four rebounds, five assists and two blocks. Brandon Ivery contributed 12 points and four rebounds, while Harouna Sangare provided a spark off the bench with nine points, all from beyond the arc.

For Western Texas, which fell to 7-8, Anesu Dehwe scored a team-high 13 points. Khedit Gatluak added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Howard improved to 15-2 with the victory, continuing a strong season that has seen them win 10 of their last 11 games. Western Texas dropped to 7-8.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Howard entered the game with a 72.20 percent probability to win, a forecast they exceeded with the 25-point rout.

Howard next plays at Odessa on Thursday. Western Texas travels to face Clarendon on the same night. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Big Spring on Feb. 19.
