Howard (Tex.) vs Western Texas

Preview: Howard (Tex.) Hawks at Western Texas Westerners

SNYDER, Texas (Interstat) — A surging Howard (Tex.) Hawks team, ranked among the nation’s elite in the junior college men’s basketball ranks, visits a Western Texas Westerners squad seeking consistency in a key regional matchup Monday night.

The Hawks (14-2) enter on a five-game winning streak, having dominated their recent schedule. Their latest victory was a 73-55 decision over New Mexico on Jan. 12, where forward Terry Copeland posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Copeland has been a force, averaging 17.5 points and 9.5 rebounds over his last two contests.

Howard’s offense has been potent, scoring 80 or more points in eight games this season, including a 104-point outburst against New Mexico Military Institute on Jan. 8. Support for Copeland comes from players like Elijah Tshibangu and Kuai Deng, who combined for 20 points and 12 rebounds in the win over New Mexico.

The Westerners (7-7) look to build momentum after a 69-64 home win over Odessa on Jan. 15. Their success often hinges on the scoring of guard Isak Homelius, who erupted for 24 points in that victory and a season-high 27 points in a win over New Mexico Military on Jan. 5. However, Homelius was held to just 7 points in a 72-49 road loss to New Mexico on Jan. 8, highlighting the team’s offensive volatility.

Western Texas has shown resilience at home, with narrow wins over Temple and Mineral Area in early December, but will face its toughest test at the WTCH in recent weeks.

The Hawks have showcased a stifling defense during their streak, holding opponents to 60 points or fewer in four of their last five games. Containing Homelius will be a primary focus. For Western Texas, finding secondary scoring behind Homelius and improving on a .500 record will be essential to challenge a Howard team playing at a championship level.

This is the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams. They will meet again in Big Spring, Texas, on Feb. 19.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CST Monday at the Western Texas College Gymnasium.
