Rio Hondo vs El Camino

TORRANCE, Calif. (Interstat) — The Rio Hondo Roadrunners defied significant odds and a stifling defensive effort to secure an 85-73 victory over the El Camino Warriors in a California Community College Athletic Association men’s basketball game Wednesday night.

Entering the contest, statistical models heavily favored El Camino, projecting the Warriors with a 75.8 percent probability to win on their home floor. Rio Hondo, however, flipped the script with a disruptive defensive performance and near-perfect free throw shooting to improve to 7-8 on the season. El Camino fell to 9-7.

The most critical phase of the game was not a singular run, but a consistent, grinding defensive effort by Rio Hondo that forced El Camino into mistakes and capitalized on them at the charity stripe. The Roadrunners amassed 14 steals, leading to 21 Warrior turnovers. While both teams finished with 30 rebounds, Rio Hondo’s ability to convert those extra possessions was decisive.

The Roadrunners’ offensive efficiency, despite shooting a lower percentage from the field than El Camino, was anchored by an extraordinary performance at the free throw line. Rio Hondo made 31 of 33 attempts, a 93.9 percent clip. In contrast, El Camino struggled, converting only 14 of 24 free throws. This 17-point disparity at the line proved insurmountable for the Warriors, who shot 50.9 percent from the field but had far fewer opportunities.

Matthew Rodriguez led Rio Hondo with 18 points, demonstrating his status as the team’s top star. He was supported by balanced scoring from Bobby Reyes and Corlin Bryant, who each added 17 points. Ryan Osborne posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. For El Camino, Justin Cricri scored 14 points, while Chase Williams contributed 11 points and seven rebounds. Linken Tate distributed nine assists.

The game’s tempo was set early, with both teams trading scores in a high-paced first half. Rio Hondo took a narrow 42-37 lead into halftime. The second half followed a similar pattern of defensive pressure and fouls, with Rio Hondo maintaining its advantage by continuing to convert at the line and limiting El Camino’s clean offensive sets. The Warriors could not piece together a sustained run to close the gap in the final minutes.

Rio Hondo next travels to face Compton on Friday. El Camino will look to rebound at home against Los Angeles Trade Tech, also on Friday.
