Jones vs Mississippi Gulf Coast

Preview: Jones Bobcats at Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs

PERKINSTON, Miss. (Interstat) — A men’s junior college basketball rematch of a double-overtime thriller highlights the schedule Thursday when the Jones College Bobcats visit the Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs (10-2) host the Bobcats (9-5) in a South Division clash. Gulf Coast holds a narrow edge in the standings and won the first meeting 116-114 in double overtime on Dec. 8 in Ellisville.

That result is fresh for a Jones team looking to even the season series and build momentum after a 100-94 win over Hinds on Monday. The Bobcats are led by guard Jay Tyler, who is coming off a standout performance with 26 points and 7 assists in that victory. Over his last two games, Tyler is averaging 18.5 points and 4 assists.

Jones will need another big night from its backcourt to counter a surging Gulf Coast squad. The Bulldogs have won three straight, including an 85-65 rout of Baton Rouge last Thursday and a 73-57 road win at Meridian on Monday. Forward Duran Parish has been a key contributor, posting 22 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists in the win over Baton Rouge.

The Bulldogs’ balanced attack and home-court advantage present a significant challenge. Since their early-season loss to Pensacola State, Gulf Coast has won 10 of its last 11 games. Jones has shown resilience, however, bouncing back from a two-game skid in mid-December with wins in two of its last three.

Thursday’s contest will likely hinge on guard play and the ability to execute in clutch moments, a facet both teams showcased in their first epic encounter. For Jones, containing Parish and improving its perimeter defense will be critical. For Gulf Coast, slowing down Tyler and Jones’s offensive rhythm is the priority.

The matchup is the only scheduled meeting between the teams in Perkinston this season.
