Hutchinson vs Pratt
PRATT, Kan. (Interstat) — The Pratt Community College Beavers, despite entering with just one win on the season, mounted a furious second-half comeback to stun the Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons 71-65 in a men’s junior college basketball game Wednesday night.
The game turned on a dramatic and decisive shift in momentum after halftime. Hutchinson, the visiting team, dominated the early proceedings, building a commanding 36-29 lead by the intermission behind a prolific first-half performance from Kyrell Shaw. The Blue Dragons’ guard was nearly unstoppable, scoring 34 points in the contest, with the majority coming before the break.
However, the second half belonged entirely to Pratt. The Beavers, now 2-12 overall, outscored Hutchinson 42-29 over the final 20 minutes. Their defense catalyzed the rally, forcing 10 of Hutchinson’s 15 turnovers after halftime and converting them into transition opportunities. Pratt finished the game with eight steals compared to Hutchinson’s two, and their ball movement was superior, notching eight assists to the Blue Dragons’ two.
The most important part of the game was a sustained Pratt run that bridged the end of the first half and the start of the second, completely erasing Hutchinson’s psychological and scoreboard advantage. It began with a Scottie Guillory three-pointer at the first-half buzzer to cut the deficit to seven points. That shot provided a critical spark, and the Beavers carried it into the second quarter with increased defensive intensity. They methodically chipped away, with Muna Godswill providing consistent interior offense and Seydina Faye adding explosive plays, including two dunks during a key sequence that gave Pratt its first significant lead.
Hutchinson, which fell to 8-7, went cold from the field at the worst possible time. After shooting 44 percent in the first half, the Blue Dragons managed only 29 points after the break, struggling against Pratt’s renewed defensive pressure. Their offensive struggles were compounded by an inability to connect from deep, finishing just 4 of 19 from three-point range. Pratt was not much better from outside, hitting only 3 of 23, but dominated points in the paint and capitalized on free throws down the stretch.
Godswill led a balanced Pratt attack with 12 points, five rebounds and a steal in just 16 minutes. Guillory added 15 points, while Faye contributed 11 points, all in the second half. Kisean Robinson facilitated with four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
For Hutchinson, Shaw’s 34-point effort on 10-of-24 shooting was the standout, but he received limited support. Lolo Rudolph added eight points and three assists, and Bobby Cannon grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Statistically, the game was a matchup of inefficient offenses, with both teams posting offensive ratings below 95.0. Pratt’s slight edges in rebounding (34-33), assists, steals, and a lower turnover count (10 to Hutchinson’s 15) proved decisive in a contest where neither team shot above 44 percent from the floor.
The result defied the pregame statistical projection, which gave Hutchinson a 63.9 percent probability to win. For Pratt, it marked a second victory in three games after a prolonged losing streak to open the season. Hutchinson will look to rebound at home against Fort Hays Tech on Saturday, while Pratt next plays at Fort Hays Tech on Jan. 21.
