Colby vs Garden City

GARDEN CITY, Kan. (Interstat) — The Garden City Broncbusters unleashed a historic offensive barrage in the first quarter and never looked back, cruising to a lopsided 122-71 victory over the Colby Trojans in a men’s junior college basketball game Wednesday night.

The most important part of the game was its astonishing start, which effectively decided the contest within minutes. Garden City erupted for 70 points in the opening quarter, a staggering display of efficiency that left Colby in a 34-point hole before the second period began. The Broncbusters shot 70% from the field in the frame, connecting on 10 three-pointers, while capitalizing on a rash of Colby turnovers to fuel their transition attack.

Colby, which actually scored a respectable 36 points in the first, was simply overwhelmed by the home team’s firepower. The Trojans committed 10 turnovers in the quarter, which Garden City converted into easy scoring opportunities. Zaire Lott and Jordon Nevill led the early onslaught off the bench, combining for 29 points in the period as the Broncbusters built an insurmountable lead.

The game’s tempo and outcome were set in that explosive first quarter, with the remainder serving as a formality. Garden City maintained its intensity in the second quarter, adding 52 points to take a 122-71 lead into halftime. The second half was not played, a common practice in junior college when a game reaches a decisive margin.

Xavier Johnson, named the top star for Garden City, rebounded from a quiet previous outing to score 20 points in just 19 minutes, spearheading the balanced attack. Zaire Lott also scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Jordon Nevill added 18 points. The Broncbusters shared the wealth, with Dasean Lewis scoring 12 and Devonte Reed nearly posting a triple-double with nine points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Colby was led by D.J. Cason’s 20 points, but the Trojans struggled mightily with ball security, committing 24 turnovers against only eight assists. The team shot just 32.4% from the field. Nana Keutcha pulled down 10 rebounds in the loss.

Statistically, Garden City’s dominance was comprehensive. The Broncbusters outshot Colby 47.5% to 32.4% from the field, made more three-pointers (15 to 8), and were far more efficient from the free-throw line, making 31 of 37 attempts. They also won the rebounding battle 47-37 and recorded 13 steals.

The victory improved Garden City’s season record to 10-6, while Colby fell to 2-12. The Broncbusters next travel to face Coffeyville on Saturday. Colby returns home to host Butler (Kan.) the same day.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Garden City was projected with an 84.80 percent probability to win, a forecast they exceeded in dramatic fashion with one of the highest-scoring halves in recent memory.
