Odessa vs Midland
MIDLAND, Texas (Interstat) — The Midland College Chaparrals, one of the nation’s remaining undefeated men’s junior college basketball teams, used a dominant first-half offensive explosion to overpower the Odessa College Wranglers 82-63 on Monday night.
The game was effectively decided in the opening 20 minutes, as Midland built an insurmountable lead by halftime. The Chaparrals scored 41 points in each of the first two quarters, racing to an 82-63 lead at the intermission. Odessa, despite scoring 32 and 31 points in the respective quarters, could not keep pace with Midland’s blistering efficiency.
The most important part of the game was Midland’s scorching start from beyond the arc, led by Antoine Bo Hurns. Hurns set the tone early, connecting on multiple three-pointers in the first quarter as part of a personal scoring barrage that helped Midland establish a double-digit lead it would never relinquish. His outside shooting stretched the Odessa defense and created driving lanes for his teammates, fueling the Chaparrals’ offensive rating of 114.5 points per 100 possessions for the game.
Hurns finished as the game’s top performer, scoring 19 points to go with five rebounds and six assists in 33 minutes. He was complemented by Cayden Reed, who added 15 points and four assists, and Solomon Ominu, who contributed 18 points and three rebounds off the bench.
Odessa, which entered the game with a 12-2 record, was led by Ahmere Carson’s 14 points. JD Bradford added 11 points and six rebounds for the Wranglers. The visitors struggled with their shooting throughout, making just 22 of 57 field goal attempts and a costly 13 of 26 from the free throw line. Their offensive rating of 83.6 highlighted their difficulties against a stout Midland defense that recorded nine steals and five blocks.
Midland’s balanced attack was too much to overcome. The Chaparrals shot 57.1% from the field and 52.9% from three-point range in the first half, building a 19-point cushion. While the scoring ceased after halftime, the defensive effort continued, holding Odessa scoreless in the second half to secure the victory.
With the win, Midland improves to 15-0 this season, continuing its perfect start. Odessa falls to 12-3. The two teams are scheduled to meet again on Thursday, Feb. 12, in Odessa.
Midland next plays at Frank Phillips on Thursday, while Odessa travels to face Western Texas on the same night.
