Western Nebraska vs Casper

Preview: Western Nebraska Cougars at Casper Thunderbirds

CASPER, Wyo. (Interstat) — Two men’s junior college basketball teams seeking momentum will meet Wednesday when the Casper Thunderbirds host the Western Nebraska Cougars.

The non-conference matchup pits struggling squads with nearly three weeks of rest since their last official games. Both teams enter on losing streaks after decisive defeats on Dec. 13.

Western Nebraska (3-10) fell 87-72 at home to Utah State Eastern in its last outing. The Cougars were led by forward Viktor Lukic-Gavric, who posted 17 points and nine rebounds. Guard Amare Jackson added six assists. The loss was the Cougars’ second in a row and seventh in their last eight games, a stretch marked by defensive struggles. Western Nebraska has allowed an average of 101.1 points in its ten losses this season.

Casper (5-9) also dropped its last contest, falling 103-68 on the road to Snow College. The Thunderbirds’ performance was highlighted by guard Aaron Sievert’s 22 points and forward Zaire Richardson’s 14 points and nine rebounds. The defeat snapped a brief two-game win streak for Casper, which had previously secured victories over Williston State and Dawson.

Historically, the teams have followed similar paths this season, with both suffering lopsided road losses to common opponents like Snow College and Eastern Arizona. The game will likely hinge on which team can better shake off the holiday break rust and find defensive consistency.

For Western Nebraska, establishing an inside presence through Lukic-Gavric and Toms Linis, who had 11 points and five rebounds last game, will be key. Casper will look to Sievert for scoring and Richardson for interior play, while guard Channing Cade, who dished six assists against Snow, will be tasked with facilitating the offense.

The game is the first of a back-to-back for both teams. Western Nebraska travels to face Gillette College on Thursday, while Casper visits Northeastern (Colo.) on the same night.

Wednesday’s tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. local time at the Swede Erickson Thunderbird Gym.
