Ventura vs Compton
COMPTON, Calif. (Interstat) — The Ventura Pirates, defying pregame projections, delivered a commanding performance to defeat the Compton Tartars 83-65 in a men’s junior college basketball game Wednesday night.
Interstat’s ELO system had given Compton a 63.3 percent probability to win at home, but Ventura seized control early and never relented. The victory improved Ventura’s record to 10-3, while Compton fell to 5-9.
The most critical phase of the game was its opening minutes, where Ventura established a psychological and numerical advantage that Compton could never overcome. The Pirates raced to an 8-0 lead within the first 90 seconds, a burst that set the tone for the entire contest. Jerimiyah Smith opened the scoring with a jump shot just 13 seconds in, and after a Compton free throw, Kam’Ron Cigar and Kevin Anigbogu added a layup and a dunk respectively. This immediate flurry forced Compton into a reactive posture and ignited Ventura’s transition game.
Smith, Ventura’s top star, led all scorers with 23 points in just 30 minutes of action, adding five rebounds and two assists. His efficient scoring, coming off a 40-point outing in his previous game, provided the consistent offensive punch. He was supported by Kam’Ron Cigar with 14 points and Jeremiah Wilson with 13 points. Snookey Wigington directed the offense with a game-high six assists.
Compton, plagued by turnovers throughout the night, was led by Nathan Ibarra’s 16 points and five rebounds. Elijah Evans added 15 points and six rebounds, while Keyshawn Ross Jr. scored 11 points and recorded four steals. Despite their efforts, the Tartars’ 30 turnovers, many converted into easy Ventura points, proved insurmountable.
The Pirates maintained a steady lead, taking a 38-30 advantage into halftime after Smith sank a 3-pointer at the first-quarter buzzer. They then methodically extended their lead in the second half, with Smith, Cigar, and Wilson providing key baskets to stifle any potential Compton rallies. The Tartars drew no closer than eight points after the initial Ventura burst, as their offense struggled to find consistent rhythm against an active Pirates defense.
Ventura next travels to face Long Beach on Friday. Compton’s next game is at home against Los Angeles City on Jan. 2.
