South Plains vs Weatherford

WEATHERFORD, Texas (Interstat) — A surging South Plains College men’s basketball team looks to continue its winning ways when it visits a struggling Weatherford College squad in a junior college non-conference matchup Saturday.

The Texans (7-2) enter on a three-game win streak, including an 88-78 victory over Western Oklahoma State on Friday. The Coyotes (3-6) snapped a four-game skid with a 64-58 win over Western Texas on Tuesday.

South Plains has been led by the hot hand of guard Deion Ware. Over his last four games, Ware is averaging 17.5 points and 5.5 rebounds, including a 27-point, 7-rebound performance in a 98-96 overtime win against Lamar on Dec. 6.

Weatherford counters with forward Kenji Franklin, who posted 11 points and seven rebounds in limited action in the team’s most recent victory. The Coyotes will need a similar effort from Franklin and improved consistency after being held under 70 points in five of their six losses this season.

According to Interstat, the game is a toss-up by one measure, with a simulator projecting a 100-100 final score. However, the same service’s ELO rating system gives South Plains a 55% probability to win.

The contest marks the final game before the holiday break for both programs. South Plains will travel to Nevada and Utah for a pair of games next week, while Weatherford is off until hosting Eastern Arizona on Jan. 2.

Saturday’s tip-off is set for 4 p.m. CST at the Coyote Fieldhouse.
