Williston State vs Gillette
GILLETTE, Wyo. (Interstat) — A key early-season Region IX men’s junior college basketball rematch is set for Wednesday when the Gillette Pronghorns host the Williston State Tetons.
The Pronghorns (4-4) edged the Tetons (3-6) 80-73 in Williston, North Dakota, on Nov. 19 in the first meeting this season. Gillette has won two straight games since, including an 82-80 victory over Dawson on Dec. 6. Williston State seeks to end a three-game skid after falling 90-84 at North Idaho on that same date.
The matchup features two of the region’s top individual talents, who both shined in the November contest. Williston State’s Josiah McDonald, a dynamic forward, scored 35 points with seven rebounds and four blocks in the loss. He is averaging 29.4 points and 8.2 rebounds over his last five games, including a 41-point outburst against Western Wyoming on Nov. 21.
Gillette counters with Rashad McCormick, who dominated the first meeting with 28 points and 15 rebounds. The guard is coming off a 25-point performance in the win over Dawson and has led the Pronghorns in scoring in three of their last four outings.
For Williston State to snap its losing streak, it will need more consistent support for McDonald. Carson Haerer dished out 11 assists in the recent loss to North Idaho, and Andrew Sauer added 16 points. The Tetons have struggled defensively, allowing 90 or more points in four of their six losses.
Gillette has found a rhythm offensively during its win streak, averaging 84.5 points in those games. Sayed Sayed has emerged as a reliable second option, scoring 20 points against Dawson.
Wednesday’s result will provide early momentum in the regional standings before both teams break for the holiday. Following this contest, Gillette travels to face national power Indian Hills on Dec. 18, while Williston State is off until a Jan. 12 home game against Miles.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. MST at the Pronghorn Center.
