Mississippi Gulf Coast vs Jones
Top-10 JUCO Showdown Set as Jones Hosts Mississippi Gulf Coast
ELLISVILLE, Miss. (Interstat) — A top-tier men’s junior college basketball matchup is set for Monday night as the Jones College Bobcats host the Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs in a clash of region heavyweights.
The Bobcats (7-2), riding a three-game win streak, welcome the Bulldogs (6-1) to A.B. Howard Gymnasium in a game featuring two of the state’s most efficient offenses. Jones averages 88.7 points per game, while Gulf Coast puts up 84.1 per contest.
Mississippi Gulf Coast arrives after a narrow 79-76 home win over Delgado on Thursday. The Bulldogs are powered by guard Duran Parish, who is coming off a 40-minute, 18-point, 8-assist performance. Parish has been a consistent force, scoring 35 points in a win over Bishop State on Nov. 20 and averaging 22.3 points over his last four games.
“He’s the engine for them,” Jones coach said of Parish. “Containing him in transition and limiting his playmaking is priority one.”
Jones counters with its own dynamic talent in forward Keron Jackson. He led the Bobcats with 19 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists in their 97-85 victory over Bishop State on Dec. 4. Jackson has shown high-ceiling performances this season, including a 15-point, 7-rebound outing against Mississippi Delta on Nov. 20.
The Bobcats’ depth will be tested, as Jackson’s minutes have fluctuated recently. Consistent production from supporting players like Bob Dickson and Braylon Barnes, who each scored 19 points in the last game, will be crucial.
Both teams boast potent scoring trios. For Gulf Coast, Maddox Noblitt and Za’Kariyea Hamilton joined Parish with 19 points apiece against Delgado. Jones saw Dickson, Barnes and Jackson all score in double figures in their latest win.
This contest is the first of a regular-season home-and-home series. The rematch is scheduled for Jan. 15 in Perkinston.
Jones looks to protect its home court and continue its momentum before a challenging Florida road trip later this week. Mississippi Gulf Coast aims to hand the Bobcats their first home loss and solidify its own strong start to the season.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST.
