Los Angeles Southwest vs Porterville
PORTERVILLE, Calif. (Interstat) — The Los Angeles Southwest College Cougars capitalized on a dominant defensive performance to defeat the Porterville College Pirates 89 to 68 in a California Community College Athletic Association men’s basketball game Saturday.
The game was decided by a staggering disparity in ball security and defensive pressure. The Cougars forced Porterville into 27 turnovers, converting those miscues into a torrent of easy scoring opportunities, particularly in transition. Los Angeles Southwest recorded 19 steals as a team, with Alusine Barrie leading the charge with six thefts.
Despite being outrebounded 43 to 24, the Cougars’ relentless defensive effort and efficient offense proved insurmountable. Los Angeles Southwest scored 89 points on 77 possessions, an offensive rating of 114.9, while Porterville managed just 68 points on 76 possessions for an offensive rating of 89.8.
The first quarter was a high-scoring affair, with Los Angeles Southwest taking a narrow 39 to 38 lead. The game’s complexion changed dramatically in the second quarter as the Cougars tightened their defensive grip. They outscored the Pirates 50 to 30 after halftime, pulling away for a comfortable victory.
Demaree Collins led the Cougars with 20 points, while Alusine Barrie added 16 points and his game-high six steals. Karifala Conde contributed 12 points and seven rebounds, and Omar Gardner anchored the interior with nine rebounds and two blocks.
For Porterville, Jermarcus Brown scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds. David Johnson added 17 points and four rebounds. Andre Bly dished out five assists but also committed a team-high six turnovers in the loss.
The victory improves Los Angeles Southwest’s overall record to 6-4. The Cougars have now won two consecutive games following a victory over Sequoias on Friday. Porterville remains winless on the season, falling to 0-5.
The outcome defied pregame projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 100-100 tie and whose ELO system gave Porterville a 54.3 percent probability of victory.
Los Angeles Southwest next plays at Merced on Nov. 29. Porterville looks for its first win on the road at El Camino on Wednesday.
