Santa Barbara vs Cerro Coso

(Interstat) — In a stunning upset that defied statistical projections, the Santa Barbara Vaqueros escaped with a narrow 75-72 victory over the Cerro Coso Coyotes in a California men’s junior college basketball game on Saturday, November 22, 2025.

The game was a tale of two halves, defined by a dominant Santa Barbara start and a furious, but ultimately futile, Cerro Coso comeback. The Vaqueros exploded out of the gate, building a commanding lead in the first quarter and taking a 33-22 advantage into the second period. However, the Coyotes mounted a relentless response after halftime, outscoring Santa Barbara 50-42 in the second quarter, only to fall just short as time expired.

The outcome was a shock to predictive systems. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 100-100 tie, while its ELO system gave Cerro Coso a 90.7 percent probability of winning.

Santa Barbara’s victory was anchored in superior ball security and defensive pressure. The Vaqueros forced 13 Cerro Coso turnovers while committing only seven themselves. This edge translated into a significant advantage in assists and steals, with Santa Barbara recording seven in each category compared to just two apiece for the Coyotes.

Despite being outrebounded 28-16 and shooting a lower percentage from the floor, the Vaqueros leveraged their three-point shooting and opportunistic defense. Santa Barbara connected on nine shots from beyond the arc, while Cerro Coso managed only three. Key performances off the bench were also crucial. Dante Calhoun and Mason Thomas each provided eight points in just seven minutes of play, while Jayden Fajardo added nine points in only four minutes.

For Santa Barbara, James Reach led the scoring effort with 18 points. For Cerro Coso, Jay Matthews was exceptionally efficient, pouring in a game-high 21 points in just 13 minutes of action. Terrance Sims Jr. added 14 points and Demarris Day chipped in 12 points and seven assists in the losing effort.

The win improves Santa Barbara’s season record to 4-2, while Cerro Coso remains winless at 0-3.

Looking ahead, Santa Barbara will host Victor Valley on Tuesday, November 25. Cerro Coso will look to secure its first win of the season when it hosts Antelope Valley on the same date.
