Orange Coast vs Los Angeles City
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — In a matchup of teams seeking their first win, the Los Angeles City Cubs used a dominant rebounding performance and superior efficiency to defeat the Orange Coast Pirates 62-50 in a California Community College Athletic Association men’s basketball game on Friday.
The game, played at Los Angeles City College, was the first victory of the season for the Cubs, who improved to 1-6. The Pirates remained winless, falling to 0-6.
Despite a game-high 21 points from Kye Usher-Brown, the story for Los Angeles City was the interior presence of Devean Mpoupe-Singui. In 33 minutes, Mpoupe-Singui recorded a formidable double-double with 14 points and a game-high 16 rebounds, anchoring a Cubs defense that stifled Orange Coast all night. His effort was part of a massive 53-36 team rebounding advantage for the Cubs, who also pulled down 19 offensive boards.
The contest was characterized by offensive struggles, particularly for the visiting Pirates. Orange Coast shot a frigid 29.7 percent from the field, converting just 19 of its 64 attempts. Their woes extended beyond the arc, where they made only 3 of 21 three-point attempts. The Pirates’ offensive rating of 67.0 points per 100 possessions underscored a night of inefficient offense.
Los Angeles City did not fare much better from the field, shooting 32.3 percent on 20-of-62 shooting. However, the Cubs found more success from three-point range, hitting 7 of 26, and were significantly more effective at the free-throw line. Los Angeles City made 15 of its 18 free throws, an 83.3 percent clip, compared to Orange Coast’s 9-of-14 performance.
The Cubs also capitalized on their possessions more effectively, posting an offensive rating of 87.9, a full 20 points higher than their opponents.
Chris Obiajulu led the Pirates with 17 points and eight rebounds. Zach Moloian provided a spark off the bench with 10 points, all scored in the first half.
The game was sloppy throughout, with the teams combining for 35 turnovers. Los Angeles City committed 19, while Orange Coast had 16. Both teams were nearly even in assists and steals, with the Pirates holding a slight 10-9 edge in assists and a 10-9 margin in steals.
Tai Williams was a key contributor for the Cubs off the bench, nearly securing a triple-double with seven points, 11 rebounds and three assists in just 17 minutes of play. Troy Agtang also dished out three assists for Los Angeles City.
The win breaks a six-game losing streak to open the season for Los Angeles City, which had lost its previous game to Los Angeles Pierce 82-70 on Wednesday. Orange Coast has now lost six straight, including a 62-52 defeat to San Diego Miramar on Nov. 13.
According to pregame analytics from Interstat, the ELO system gave Los Angeles City a 78.1 percent probability to win, though the game simulator had projected a much higher-scoring 100-100 tie.
Orange Coast will look for its first win on Dec. 12 when it hosts MiraCosta. Los Angeles City returns to action on Dec. 5 for a home game against El Camino.
