Chaffey vs Santiago Canyon

ORANGE, Calif. (Interstat) — The Santiago Canyon Hawks used a dominant offensive performance to overpower the Chaffey Panthers 95-72 in a men’s junior college basketball game Friday night.

The Hawks improved their record to 2-0, while the Panthers fell to 1-2 on the young season.

Santiago Canyon’s offense was firing on all cylinders from the opening tip, building a 40-33 lead by the end of the first quarter and never looking back. They exploded for 55 points in the second quarter to put the game out of reach, showcasing an efficiency that the Panthers could not match. The Hawks shot a blistering 55.6 percent from the floor, connecting on 35 of 63 attempts, and were nearly as effective from beyond the arc, making 13 of 30 three-pointers.

Chaffey, conversely, struggled with its shooting throughout the contest. The Panthers managed to make only 29 of their 80 field goal attempts, a 36.3 percent clip, and hit just 8 of 28 from three-point range.

The disparity in offensive execution was further highlighted by the teams’ offensive ratings. Santiago Canyon scored 95 points on just 78 possessions, an elite rating of 121.7, while Chaffey’s 72 points on 83 possessions resulted in a rating of 86.5.

Jacob De Armas led the charge for the Hawks, stuffing the stat sheet with 19 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 blocks in 34 minutes of action. He was one of five Santiago Canyon players to score in double figures, demonstrating the team’s balanced and potent attack.

Salim Semaan recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Ryan Weber also notched a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Jayden Oei contributed 15 points, and Dominic Bolton added 12 for the Hawks, who also won the rebounding battle 46-41.

Chaffey was led by Semaj Morrison, who poured in a game-high 23 points. Avery Garcia added 10 points and a team-high 4 assists, and Kajuan Thomas pulled down 8 rebounds to go with 8 points.

Despite committing 15 turnovers to Chaffey’s 11, the Hawks’ superior shooting and playmaking, evidenced by their 8 assists to Chaffey’s 6, proved to be the decisive factor. Santiago Canyon also capitalized on its free-throw opportunities, making 12 of 17, while Chaffey went 6 for 11 from the line.

The game played out largely as statistical models predicted, with Interstat’s ELO system giving Santiago Canyon a 79 percent probability to win.

Chaffey will look to rebound on Wednesday, November 12, when they host Los Angeles Trade Tech. Santiago Canyon continues its homestand on Thursday, November 13, against Antelope Valley.
