Lamar vs Western Texas

SNYDER, Texas (Interstat) — In a high-octane junior college men’s basketball contest defined by offensive runs and a frantic final minute, the Western Texas Westerners outlasted the Lamar Runnin’ Lopes 77-73 on Friday night.

The game was a tale of two halves, with the first quarter setting a torrid scoring pace. Western Texas built an early lead, capitalizing on a flurry of Lamar turnovers to go ahead 46-42 after the opening period. The second quarter, however, was a defensive grind, with both teams scoring 31 points as the Westerners held on for the four-point victory.

The outcome was decided in the game’s final seconds. With the score tied at 73 and just 12 seconds remaining, Lamar’s Jaylon Brown was called for a personal foul, sending Western Texas’ Isak Homelius to the free-throw line. Homelius calmly sank both shots to put the Westerners up by two. On the ensuing possession, Lamar’s RJ Foreman committed a foul with no time remaining, and Western Texas’ Jalen Brown sealed the win by making two more free throws.

Statistical efficiency told the story of the game. Western Texas scored its 77 points on 72 possessions, for an offensive rating of 107.5, while Lamar managed 73 points on 75 possessions, an offensive rating of 97.9. The Westerners won the battle on the glass decisively, outrebounding Lamar 40-28, including a 13-5 advantage on the offensive boards that led to crucial second-chance opportunities.

Lamar was led by a standout performance from Gavin Dabney, who scored a game-high 24 points. Christian Payawal contributed 8 points and a team-high 5 assists for the Runnin’ Lopes. Jaylon Brown and RJ Foreman each added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Western Texas countered with a balanced attack. Justin McCall matched Dabney’s output with 24 points of his own. Isak Homelius provided a critical 15 points, while Calven Charles controlled the paint with a double-double of 6 points and 11 rebounds. Jalen Brown finished with 11 points.

Both teams struggled with ball security, combining for 36 turnovers. Lamar committed 17, while Western Texas had 19. The Runnin’ Lopes did force 9 steals, led by Christian Payawal’s 3, but it was not enough to overcome the Westerners’ rebounding dominance and slightly more efficient shooting night.

With the loss, Lamar falls to 2-5 on the season. The Runnin’ Lopes are scheduled to face Howard College in a doubleheader on Saturday. Western Texas improves to 3-5 and will not play again until they host Temple College on December 5. The result defied the pregame projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 100-100 tie and whose ELO system gave Western Texas only a slight 50.7 percent probability to win.
