Lawson State vs Jones

JONES, Miss. (Interstat) — The Jones Bobcats remained undefeated Monday night, outlasting the Lawson State Cougars 98-90 in a high-scoring, foul-plagued men’s junior college basketball game decided at the free-throw line.

Jones improved to 3-0 while Lawson State dropped its fourth straight game to fall to 1-4.

The game was a tale of two vastly different offensive approaches. The Bobcats attempted only nine three-pointers, missing all of them, but lived at the free-throw line, converting 38 of 46 attempts. The Cougars, conversely, shot 10 for 35 from beyond the arc but were hampered by foul trouble, committing 27 personal fouls that led to the Bobcats’ parade to the charity stripe.

Jones also dominated the glass, outrebounding Lawson State 53 to 40.

The contest was a back-and-forth affair from the opening tip. Jones opened the scoring with a Braylon Barnes jump shot just 12 seconds in, but Lawson State’s Keaton Cross answered with a layup less than a minute later to keep the game tight. The first quarter featured six ties and five lead changes, with Lawson State holding a narrow 36-38 edge after the opening period.

The second quarter saw Jones begin to create separation, outscoring the Cougars 60-54. The Bobcats’ offense was fueled by their ability to draw contact and capitalize, building a lead that the Cougars could not overcome despite a flurry of three-pointers in the final minutes.

Bob Dickson led the way for Jones with a dominant double-double, scoring 23 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. Braylon Barnes was the game’s high scorer with 27 points and added nine rebounds. Wesley Lindsey also recorded a double-double for the Bobcats with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Jay Tyler facilitated the offense with 14 points and five assists.

Lawson State was led by Iago Stanback, who scored 21 points, including five three-pointers. Keaton Cross added 18 points, and Hannibal Smith provided a spark off the bench with 11 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Yusef Bowyer dished out a game-high five assists for the Cougars.

The game was the first of a home-and-home series between the two teams, who are scheduled to meet again on Tuesday, Dec. 2, at Lawson State.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Jones was projected with a 76.20 percent probability to win, a forecast that held true as the Bobcats used a commanding rebounding advantage and a prolific night at the foul line to secure the victory.
