Brandon Hymes led all scorers for Dawson, pouring in 20 points, including a crucial layup with 28 seconds remaining and a clinching free throw in the final seconds. His performance was vital for a Buccaneers squad that shot just 38.5% from the floor and 23.1% from three-point range.
The Lancers were led by a double-double from Isiah Ayala, who scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Toney Collins provided a significant offensive spark off the bench with a team-high 18 points.
The game was a statistical oddity, with both teams posting nearly identical offensive ratings. Eastern Wyoming scored 75 points on 78 possessions for a rating of 96.1, while Dawson managed 79 points on 82 possessions for a rating of 96.0. The difference came down to free throws and rebounding.
Dawson attempted 30 free throws, making 23, compared to Eastern Wyoming’s 19 attempts and 15 makes. The Buccaneers also dominated the glass, outrebounding the Lancers 44-33, including a 12-4 advantage on the offensive boards that led to critical second-chance opportunities.
Despite committing 15 turnovers to Eastern Wyoming’s 11, Dawson’s defense was disruptive, recording seven steals and five blocks. The Lancers were even more active defensively, notching 11 steals and forcing several key turnovers to stay in the game.
The first half was a high-scoring affair, with Dawson taking a 43-36 lead into the break after a back-and-forth opening period. The second half settled into a defensive grind, with both teams struggling to find consistent offense.
