Arizona Western vs Colorado Northwestern

RANGELY, Colo. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant opening quarter, the Arizona Western Matadors built a substantial early lead and then held off a second-half push from the Colorado Northwestern Spartans to secure a 72-62 victory in a men’s junior college basketball game Wednesday night.

The Matadors, who improved to 2-1 overall, exploded for 42 points in the first quarter, establishing a 13-point cushion that the Spartans could never fully erase. Colorado Northwestern, which fell to 1-2, managed 29 points in the opening period but spent the remainder of the contest trying to claw back from the early deficit.

Arizona Western’s offense was efficient and balanced in the first quarter, capitalizing on several early Spartan turnovers to build momentum. The Matadors’ defense set the tone, with Aaron Barton and Marsai Mason each recording steals that led to quick transition baskets, helping to fuel the initial surge. Matt Anglo was a key contributor in the frame, attacking the basket and converting from the free-throw line.

The Spartans settled into the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Matadors 33-30, but the damage from the first quarter proved insurmountable. Colorado Northwestern’s offense found more rhythm, with Trey Johnson and Jordan Jones leading the charge. Johnson finished the game as the contest’s leading scorer with 15 points, while Jones nearly secured a double-double with 8 points and 10 rebounds.

Despite the Spartans’ improved play after the first quarter, the Matadors consistently had an answer for every run. Arizona Western’s victory was a collective effort, with several players making significant contributions. Paora Winitana recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, providing a strong interior presence. Balla Kouyate anchored the defense with 11 rebounds and 2 blocked shots.

Matt Anglo led the Matadors in scoring with 12 points, while Aaron Barton added 9 points and was disruptive defensively. Marsai Mason provided valuable energy off the bench, chipping in 7 points and 6 rebounds in just 14 minutes of play.

For the Spartans, Finn Powelson complemented Johnson and Jones with 8 points and 5 rebounds, and Carter Killian added 6 points and 5 rebounds.

The win gives Arizona Western a winning record as they head into a back-to-back road trip against Utah State Eastern and Snow College this weekend. The loss sends Colorado Northwestern into a extended break before they resume play on Nov. 14 at Western Wyoming College. The result was an upset according to pregame projections, as Interstat’s ELO system had given the Spartans a 62.8 percent probability to win, and its game simulator had projected a high-scoring tie.
