WEATHERFORD, Texas (Interstat) — The Midland College Chaparrals opened their season with an 86-77 victory over the Weatherford College Coyotes in a men’s junior college basketball game Tuesday night. Midland used a strong first-half offensive performance, outscoring Weatherford 39-37 in the opening quarter and 47-40 in the second to build a lead it would not relinquish. The win gives Midland a 1-0 start to the season. Weatherford, which was projected as the favorite by Interstat’s ELO system, drops to 0-2. Keith Gillespie and Josiah Coleman each scored 20 points in the losing effort for the Coyotes. The two teams are scheduled to meet again on Dec. 1 in Midland.
