Barton vs Eastern Arizona
THATCHER, Ariz. (Interstat) — In a men’s junior college basketball game that defied pregame projections, the Barton Cougars edged the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters 76-73 on Saturday, November 1, 2025, remaining undefeated on the young season.
The contest was a tale of two halves, defined by a blistering first-quarter offensive display from Barton that ultimately provided the cushion needed to withstand a fierce Eastern Arizona comeback attempt. The Cougars improved to 2-0, while the Gila Monsters fell to an even 1-1.
Barton seized control early, erupting for 48 points in the opening quarter. The Cougars’ offense was efficient and relentless, capitalizing on Eastern Arizona turnovers and converting at the free-throw line. The Gila Monsters, despite scoring a respectable 39 points of their own in the period, found themselves in a nine-point hole after just ten minutes of play.
The second quarter saw a dramatic shift in momentum. Barton’s scoring cooled considerably to 28 points, while Eastern Arizona’s defense tightened and their offense found a more consistent rhythm, adding 34 points to their total. The Gila Monsters chipped away at the lead throughout the quarter, setting up a tense final possession.
With mere seconds remaining and trailing by three, Eastern Arizona’s Ryder Bush launched a potential game-tying 3-point shot that missed its mark as time expired, sealing the narrow victory for the visiting Cougars.
Statistical efficiency told the story of the game. Barton scored 76 points on 73 possessions, posting an offensive rating of 104.3. Eastern Arizona, despite having more opportunities with 82 possessions, managed only 73 points for a less efficient offensive rating of 89.4. The Gila Monsters were hampered by 13 turnovers, compared to nine for Barton.
Barton’s victory was anchored by a standout performance from Aris Rodriguez, who led all scorers with 27 points in 32 minutes, adding six rebounds. He was complemented by Jayden Ramirez, who contributed 17 points and four assists, and Pavel Ivanov, who added 13 points and six rebounds. Majok Chuol was a force on the glass, pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds for the Cougars.
Eastern Arizona was led by a balanced attack. Ryder Bush filled the stat sheet with 17 points and six assists. Derek Collins provided a spark off the bench with 15 points and six rebounds, while Kofi Peyton added 14 points. Ryan Hunt narrowly missed a double-double with 11 points and seven rebounds.
From the field, Barton shot 25 for 55, while Eastern Arizona was held to 21 for 60. Both teams made six 3-pointers, but Barton’s superior free-throw shooting proved critical; the Cougars hit 20 of 25 attempts from the line, while the Gila Monsters made 25 of 35.
The outcome was a surprise based on pregame analytics. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Eastern Arizona with a 62.10 percent probability to win, while the same service’s game simulator had forecast a much higher-scoring affair with Barton winning 144-100.
Barton entered the game following a 74-67 road victory at Arizona Western the previous night. Eastern Arizona was coming off a 73-69 home win against Gillette.
