Arizona Western vs Gillette

GILLETTE, Wyo. (Interstat) — The Arizona Western Matadors capitalized on a dominant first half and a disruptive defensive effort to secure their first win of the young season, defeating the Gillette Pronghorns 88-72 in a men’s junior college basketball game Saturday.

In a matchup where national statistical projections heavily favored the home team, the Matadors flipped the script from the opening tip. Arizona Western established control early, building a six-point lead by the end of a fast-paced first quarter and never looking back. The Matadors entered halftime with a commanding 16-point advantage, a cushion built on efficient scoring and relentless pressure.

The game was ultimately decided by Arizona Western’s ability to force mistakes and capitalize on them. The Matadors’ defense was tenacious, racking up 17 steals and forcing 22 Gillette turnovers. This defensive intensity directly fueled their transition offense and offset their own 19 giveaways. While both teams attempted 63 field goals, Arizona Western’s ability to generate extra possessions through steals was a critical factor.

Offensively, the Matadors shared the scoring load effectively. Marsai Martinez led the way with a near double-double, contributing 17 points and nine rebounds in just 18 minutes of action. Mario Brunetto provided a massive spark off the bench, pouring in 16 points, while Nikola Aleksic added 14 points and four assists. Illiam Fevry also reached double figures with 10 points.

Despite the loss, Gillette saw strong individual performances. Moses Blackwell led the Pronghorns with 13 points and five assists. Rashad McCormick also scored 13 points and Aly Tapo added 12, but the team struggled to find a consistent rhythm against Arizona Western’s defensive schemes. A key differentiator was three-point shooting; the Matadors connected on seven shots from beyond the arc, while the Pronghorns managed only four on 21 attempts.

The victory levels Arizona Western’s record at 1-1 after a season-opening loss to Barton. The Matadors will look to build on this momentum as they head on the road for a three-game swing, starting at Colorado Northwestern on Wednesday, Nov. 5.

The loss drops Gillette to 0-2 to start the season, following a narrow defeat to Eastern Arizona the previous night. The Pronghorns will seek their first win when they travel to face Miles on Saturday, Nov. 8.
