Community Christian vs Cochise

DOUGLAS, Ariz. (Interstat) — The Cochise Apaches used a dominant offensive performance and relentless defensive pressure to overpower the Community Christian Saints for the second consecutive night, securing a 95-71 victory in a men’s junior college basketball game Saturday.

Just 24 hours after a 107-40 rout, Cochise improved to 2-0 on the young season, while Community Christian fell to 0-2.

The Apaches’ offense was ruthlessly efficient, shooting 62 percent from the floor, compared to the Saints’ 44 percent. Cochise also capitalized on a staggering disparity in ball security, forcing 24 Community Christian turnovers while committing 17 of their own. The Apaches converted those takeaways into a 17-9 advantage in steals.

Teron Murray and Davon Jones led the Cochise attack. Murray poured in 26 points, showcasing his versatility with a dunk, a 3-pointer, and a steady presence at the free-throw line. Jones added 21 points, his scoring often coming in transition off Saints’ miscues. Emmanuel Jo Samuel provided a significant spark off the bench with 18 points.

For Community Christian, Jermiah Calhoun shouldered the scoring load with 26 points, but it came on a high volume of shots. Amari Callender contributed 18 points and seven rebounds, while Sage Gonzalez added 16 points and five rebounds.

The game’s outcome was heavily influenced by a chaotic first quarter that set the tone. Despite the Saints scoring 41 points in the period, they found themselves trailing as the Apaches erupted for 47. The opening minutes were a whirlwind of turnovers and transition plays, with Cochise quickly erasing an early deficit and seizing control with a 13-0 run midway through the quarter.

Cochise never relented in the second quarter, extending its lead by outscoring Community Christian 48-30. The Apaches’ ball movement was superior, finishing with 17 assists to the Saints’ nine, and their defense consistently disrupted Community Christian’s offensive sets.

The statistical profile highlighted the Apaches’ comprehensive control. They posted an offensive rating of 115.1, meaning they scored 115.1 points per 100 possessions, dwarfing the Saints’ rating of 84.6. While the teams were nearly even in total rebounds, Cochise’s ability to generate higher-quality shots and capitalize on opponent errors proved decisive.

The victory was in line with pregame projections from Interstat’s ELO system, which gave Cochise an 88.40 percent probability to win.

Community Christian will look for its first win on the road against Lamar State-Port Arthur on Wednesday. Cochise returns to action at home against Laramie County on Nov. 14.
