UHSP vs Columbia (Mo.)
Preview: Struggling UHSP Faces Tall Task at Columbia (Mo.)
COLUMBIA, Mo. (Interstat) — A stark contrast in fortunes will be on display Thursday afternoon when the NAIA’s fourth-ranked Columbia (Mo.) Cougars host the UHSP men’s basketball team at the Arena of Southwell Complex.
The Cougars (23-3), riding high as one of the nation’s elite teams, will face a UHSP squad mired in a difficult season at 3-22. Columbia has dominated the recent series, winning the last two meetings by an average of 18 points, including an 84-60 victory just five days ago.
For UHSP to have any chance at an monumental upset, they will lean heavily on freshman standout Landon Engelage. The guard has been a bright spot, averaging 17.4 points and 7.6 rebounds over his last eight games. He scored 17 points in Saturday’s loss to Columbia and is capable of explosive performances, evidenced by a 33-point, 13-rebound outing against Mission (Mo.) on Jan. 31.
Columbia counters with its own force in forward Johnny Anderson. In the Feb. 21 win over UHSP, Anderson posted 18 points and nine rebounds. He has been a consistent double-double threat, recording two in his last five games, and anchors a Cougars defense that has held opponents to an average of 63.2 points during their current five-game win streak.
The matchup inside between Engelage and Anderson will be critical. In the two head-to-head meetings this month, Columbia’s depth and defensive pressure have proven decisive, forcing UHSP into offensive struggles beyond Engelage’s production.
UHSP’s last win came on Feb. 7 against Williams Baptist. Since then, they have lost four straight, all by double digits. Columbia, meanwhile, has won 10 of its last 11, with the only blemish a road loss to Williams Baptist.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. Thursday. Columbia will look to solidify its national seeding, while UHSP seeks a season-defining upset behind its talented freshman.
