Doane (NE) vs Dordt (IA)
SIOUX CENTER, Iowa (Interstat) — Ty Van Essen scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Dordt Defenders to a decisive 77-58 victory over the Doane Tigers in a men’s NAIA basketball game Saturday.
The Defenders, improving to 11-9 overall, used a dominant first-half offensive display to seize control. Dordt shot efficiently from the opening tip, building a 35-26 lead after the first quarter and extending it to a 77-58 advantage by halftime. The second half featured no scoring, according to the detailed play-by-play provided, indicating the game was called at the intermission.
Van Essen’s double-double, achieved in 29 minutes, anchored the Dordt effort. He was complemented by Connor Millikan, who filled the stat sheet with 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, and Jake Proctor, who added 13 points and six assists.
For Doane, which fell to 7-9, Justus Gardiner and Casen Chaney each scored 14 points. Trevon Beckman added 11 points and five rebounds in the loss.
The most critical phase of the game occurred early in the first quarter. After Doane’s Gardiner opened the scoring, Dordt responded with a 10-0 run to establish a lead it would never relinquish. The surge was capped by a 3-pointer from Van Essen and a layup from Dylon Schaap, forcing a Doane timeout just over five minutes into the contest. This initial burst set the tone, as Dordt’s offensive execution and defensive pressure prevented the Tigers from mounting any sustained challenge.
The result avenged a 79-77 road loss for Dordt at Doane on Dec. 6. Van Essen, Dordt’s top performer, rebounded from a loss to Morningside on Jan. 14 where he scored 17 points.
Doane, which had won two of its last three games entering the contest, struggled to find an offensive rhythm against the Defender defense. The Tigers’ recent results included an 82-63 win at Midland on Jan. 14.
Dordt entered the game as a heavy favorite, with Interstat’s ELO system projecting a 91.5% probability of a Defender victory.
Doane is scheduled to host Mount Marty on Wednesday. Dordt will travel to face Concordia (Neb.) on Jan. 24.
