Michigan Dominates Arizona to Advance in NCAA Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS (Interstat) — In a clash of titans with identical gaudy records and national championship aspirations, the Michigan Wolverines delivered a commanding and wire-to-wire performance to defeat the Arizona Wildcats 91-73 in a men’s NCAA Division I playoff game on Saturday before a crowd of 72,111 at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The victory, powered by a dominant first half and a stellar 26-point effort from center Aday Mara, propelled Michigan to the next round and improved its season record to 36-3. Arizona, also a 36-win team entering the contest, saw its season end at 36-3.

From the opening tip, which the 7-foot-3 Mara won, Michigan imposed its will. Mara scored the game’s first points on a tip-in and set the tone for a half where the Wolverines’ offensive execution and defensive intensity overwhelmed the Wildcats. Michigan built a 16-point halftime lead, 48-32, by shooting efficiently and forcing Arizona into rushed shots and turnovers.

The most critical stretch of the game came midway through the first half, with Michigan leading 10-5. The Wolverines unleashed a devastating 12-0 run over just two minutes and 35 seconds to seize full control. The burst featured a layup from Morez Johnson, a three-pointer from Yaxel Lendeborg, a steal and dunk by Trey McKenney, and was capped by a three-pointer from point guard Elliot Cadeau. That sequence pushed the lead to 22-5 and forced an Arizona timeout, but the Wildcats never fully recovered.

Arizona, which entered the game as a slight favorite according to statistical projections, struggled to find consistent offense outside of forward Koa Peat, who finished with 16 points. The Wildcats shot poorly from the floor and could not string together enough stops to mount a serious comeback in the second half. Every time Arizona showed a flicker of momentum, Michigan had an answer, often from Mara in the post or from McKenney on the perimeter.

Mara, the sophomore from Zaragoza, Spain, was the game’s undisputed star. In 29 minutes, he scored his 26 points on an array of hook shots, dunks, and put-backs, adding three assists and two blocks. His size and skill in the paint were problems Arizona could not solve. He was ably supported by Cadeau, who orchestrated the offense with 13 points and 10 assists, and McKenney, who provided a crucial scoring punch with 16 points, including four three-pointers.

Michigan’s balance was evident as five players scored in double figures, with Johnson contributing 10 points and four assists and Lendeborg adding 11 points off the bench. The Wolverines shared the ball effectively, assisting on a high percentage of their made baskets, and outrebounded the Wildcats.

For Arizona, Peat’s 16 points led the way, with Jaden Bradley and Brayden Burries each adding 13. Center Motiejus Krivas scored 11 but was often matched against Mara’s physical presence. The Wildcats improved their offensive output in the second half, scoring 41 points, but could not cut the deficit below 14 points as Michigan’s offense continued to operate at a high level, scoring 43 after intermission to maintain its comfortable margin.

The game’s total points, 164, surpassed the pregame over/under line of 157. Michigan will advance to face Connecticut on Monday, April 6, continuing its pursuit of a national title. The Wolverines have now won 10 of their last 11 games, with the only loss in that span coming to Purdue in the conference tournament. Arizona’s season concludes after a remarkable run that included victories over Houston, Kansas, and Purdue in the preceding rounds.
