Purdue vs. Michigan
CHICAGO (Interstat) — A Big Ten championship and potential NCAA tournament seed are on the line Sunday when the second-ranked Michigan Wolverines face the Purdue Boilermakers at the United Center.
Michigan (31-2), the conference’s regular-season champion, enters as a 6-point favorite with an over/under of 151. The Wolverines have won 10 of their last 11, including a 91-80 victory at Purdue on Feb. 17. Their only loss since mid-February was a non-conference setback at Duke.
The Wolverines are led by center Aday Mara, who is coming off a dominant performance with 16 points, eight rebounds and five blocks in a 68-65 win over Wisconsin on Saturday. Over his last five games, Mara is averaging 14.4 points and 4.2 blocks, anchoring one of the nation’s most efficient defenses.
Purdue (26-8), the tournament’s seed, arrives in Chicago on a three-game winning streak, most recently a 73-66 victory at UCLA on Saturday. The Boilermakers’ success has been fueled by guard Oscar Cluff, who scored 17 points in that win and is averaging 15.6 points over his last three contests. Purdue will need a stronger showing from Cluff than in the February meeting with Michigan, where he was limited to four points in 20 minutes.
The matchup pits Purdue’s high-powered offense, which has scored 80 or more points in four of its last five games, against a stout Michigan defense that has held 10 consecutive opponents under 71 points. Rebounding and paint presence will be critical, as both teams feature formidable frontcourts.
The winner will claim the Big Ten tournament title and secure a likely top seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. EDT on Sunday, March 15.
